The Morso Squirrel Wood Burning Stove Review

Morso Squirrel stoves are one of the most popular collections of wood burning and multi fuel stoves available.

In total, there are 8 different stoves in the collection: Morso Squirrel 1410, Morso Squirrel 1412, Morso Squirrel 1416, Morso Squirrel 1430, Morso Squirrel 1435, Morso Squirrel 1442, Morso Squirrel 1442 - Royal Edition, and the Morso Squirrel 1446. They all come with a 10-year stove body warranty.

At first glance that looks like a large jumble of numbers, but once you learn the differences between them all it's actually quite simple. For example, the only difference between the Morso 1430 & the Morso 1435 is the aesthetic on the side of the stove.

Now granted, not all the differences are that simple, but we will cover all that in this extensive Morso Squirrel guide.

For now, let’s keep it simple! For the time being, the only thing you need to keep in mind is what type of fuel are you going to be burning on your stove? Are you going to be burning solely wood, or are you going to be burning a variety of materials?

All Morso Stoves can burn wood, but they can’t all burn smokeless fuels. If you are interested in what types of wood you should burn, take a look at our wood burning guide.

The Morso Squirrel 1412, 1416, 1442, 1442 – Royal Edition & 1446 are all dedicated wood burning stoves, and cannot burn smokeless fuels.

The Morso Squirrel 1410, 1430 & 1435 are multi fuel stoves and therefore can burn both wood and smokeless fuels.

Now you know what burns what, let’s take a closer in-depth look at each individual stove. If you know what fuel you are wanting to burn, just skip the squirrels that don’t meet your requirements.

Morso Squirrel Fuel Types

More Information

The Morsø Squirrel 1410 is arguably the most versatile stove in the squirrel range. A favourite amongst narrowboat owners due to its size and traditional aesthetics, it offers the full wood burning experience at the lowest price.

Built from sturdy cast iron, the 1410 is classed as a multi fuel stove as it is capable of burning both wood and smokeless fuels. This stove is capable of outputting heat at a nominal rate of 4.5Kw's, making it perfect for smaller rooms and smaller spaces.

The stove comes with a primary and secondary air supply. The primary air enters the stove through an easily accessible control spinner on the front, allowing for total control over the fuels combustion rate. As an added bonus, all Morsø Squirrel 1410's come with a built in airwash system. This system circulates air over the inside of the stove's glass, keeping it clearer & cleaner for longer.

There is a separate door underneath the main door for removing left over ash. This is collected in a steel ash pan that is supplied with the stove as standard.

As standard, the Morsø Squirrel 1410 comes with 100mm high legs. If you'd prefer a slightly taller stove, leg sets are available in 150mm and 250mm.

The standard Morsø Squirrel range (1410, 1430 & 1435) all have a stainless steel clip in boiler option available. This boiler offers 8000 BTU's of heat output, enough for a nice warm shower on your narrow boat.

Side note: To work out the heat output required for your room, simply measure the length, width and height of your living space in millimetres (mm). Then either divide that number by 10 if your room is poorly insulated, 14 if your room is to a standard degree of insulation, or divide by 25 if your room is supremely well insulated. This will give you the rough kilowatt (kW) reading required to heat your room efficiently.

The Morso Squirrel 1412 is a dedicated wood burning stove only and has been DEFRA Approved for use in smoke controlled areas across the UK. What exactly is a DEFRA Approved Stove?. Some areas in the United Kingdom are known as smoke controlled areas. In these areas, you are only authorised to burn certain types of fuel, or you are required to use an exempt appliance. To check if you are in a smoke controlled area - simply visit Gov.UK/smoke-control-area-rules.

Like all of the Morso Squirrels, the Morso 1412 is equipped with a riddling grate and ash pan, making the removal of ash simple. However, unlike the Morso 1410, there is no separate door on the front of the stove for the ashpan removal.

Built from cast iron, the 1412 offers a fantastic output of 5Kw making it perfect for small cosy living rooms, or even on your boat! It is available with either the iconic Morso Squirrel motif or a more plane contemporary ribbed side.

Similar to the Morso 1410. The 1412 is equipped with both primary and secondary air supply. Again, you have total control over its combustion rate. Airwash technology is also fitted as standard in all Morso squirrels.
